Sweeney Q & A August 16th

Hello Everyone:

As many of you are aware, we've been soliciting input over the last couple of months on how we can better serve your needs. A recurring theme is that you'd like more interaction with the coaches. So...

On Thursday August 16th at 7pm Eastern/4pm Pacific, Professor James Sweeney will be having office hours to answer questions you have about any aspect of poker and our products. The session will be hosted on the SplitSuit Twitch channel:

You might like to follow the channel and turn on notifications so you get a meep as the session goes live.

The session is scheduled for at least an hour and we anticipate it will run longer than that. I'll add further details closer to the event.

Note that we are NOT planning on rebroadcasting the entire event, but edited highlights featuring the most educationally-useful questions and answers will be created and posted to YouTube.

We appreciate that, particularly for those of you with standard work schedules, this time may be problematic if you're west of the Rockies. Frankly it's no picnic in Europe or Asia/Pacific Rim either. With this in mind, and assuming the first session is a success, we aim to schedule a second session later in the year that will accommodate left coasters.

Hope to see you there.

~ Kat

    1. I REALLY enjoy that you just said 'meep'
    2. If anyone cannot make it live but still wants to ask a question, feel free to ask here and I'll draw from this thread if time allows =)

    A week to go folks!

If you can't make it, leave a Q here. If you can and the Q is super long and complicated, leave it here!

    Hi James,

I am interested in what you do to warm up before a poker session. Do you do anything before a live session to get into the groove? Do you do anything different before an online session? And what about breaks? Do you just walk around and go to the bathroom, or do you have any habits or routines that you believe are +EV that we could emulate?

Awesome question - added to the list =)

Apologies, haven't finished the whole series yet, so my question may be a bit premature.

    Question #1
Why are we sticking with 70% on all streets instead of using pot odds to determine our continuance in terms of our calling \ raising range?

    Question #2
I haven't seen recommended bet sizing yet, but if we know villain is calling an average of 70%, should we be using the smaller cbet size, 42% or smaller?

Apologies last minute questions. Only through the first 4 videos. Mostly just doing 1 video a day to really try and absorb all info.

    James,

I’d like you to take a few minutes to talk about what it means for your opponent to “break the rules first”. I was tripped up on this for a long time looking for deviations on a very micro level. I now see this as recognizing and adjusting based on their frequencies of folding/calling/bluffing at rates that deviate consistently. from “optimum”. This is where we adjust our own starting ranges AND continuance frequencies in response to the opponents at our table. This is where The 1% meets Playing the Player. A clear example or two here would be helpful.

These adjustments are easier when the table is mostly playing with similar frequency deviations. It’s trickier when facing a variety of styles at the same table.

Just finished video 5. One small error when you carried over A4dhs to the turn with the turn being the :4D: but we all get the big picture.

    Question #3
If we are using a smaller sizing such as half pot, should we change our ratios to 3 value 1 bluff since villain is getting 3:1 and only has to be right 1 out of 4 times?

Will this be listed as a pro video as well? Also when will the youtube be released?

    PRO video: Likely not
YouTube: Sept-Oct would be my guess.

Part 6 of the series you talk about river bluff frequency. I wanted to point out the stack sizes a bit, even at 200bb starting your left with

    River ($462) :Qd:8H::6S::2S::TD:
    Hj bets $350
    Hero ($780)

For hero to bluff raise here pot would be 1592 and 430 for villain to call.

You mentioned having 11 value and 6 bluffs in your visual here. However, were offering pot odds of 3.7 :1 so villain only has to be right here around 21% of the time.

I think based on those odds villain would just seigh call a lot of his 1 pair hands like KQ+, so stacks have to be say 300bb deep for any type of real fold equity.

Would this be a bad event where our ratio of 2:1 favoring value is off on the river due to stack sizes?

I feel like I missed half of the Q&A despite trying to stream the entire time. None the less I would like to say thank you to @SplitSuit as my questions were answered some what. Again... Feel like I missed the entire answer as I was listening while driving around and service kept cutting out.

A bad connection will make streaming Twitch miserable. Sorry to hear you had to suffer through the chop =(

We sort of subsumed it within the monthly PRO group coaching sessions, but if there is a demand for something like this that is more widely available I'd be happy to pass that request upstairs.
