How many people actually study poker?

Random thought I had while studying (ironically) was how many player actually study off table?

For example I know a lot of us are heading to Vegas for WSOP - in an event like Big50, colossus, etc which are more rec friendly, what percentage do you think actually study poker and attempt to get better?

I’d imagine most people on this site do, same with the folks we follow on social in the “poker community” but I feel like there are loads of people descending in Vegas who still “play by feel” and care more about their hole cards and what they hit than anything else.

Do 20% of players study, maybe 40%? Off topic but curious to hear what others think.

I have a friend who plays weekly and when I mentioned I was setting up my weeks study plan he was dumbfounded. "Study Poker??" he asked. The concept had never crossed his mind. And this is a very intelligent individual who is making money on a regular basis.

    <3% would be my guess.

And to echo Kat's statement, I think even some of those would confuse "watching poker VLOGs on YouTube" to mean "I study poker every week!"

I agree - in Vegas with a buddy from out of state and he let me know his study was the JohnnieVibes Vlog and listening to Podcasts. Love JV’s content, but that’s not studying. . .

Reg’d for the Big50 today and had people in line saying how this was their first time in a casino playing poker (these were not online grinders). I think <3% has to be close. Hoping that will help with the massive fields in events..anything for an edge.

    Should be a great summer!

I wonder about this. I sit and listen to some guys at the table talk strategy, and I'm not sure if it's something they read or just something they're blathering on about, repeating conventional wisdom from other people blathering on. I think some people have played enough and thought about the game while they're playing and have the lingo down pat so it sounds like they know what they're talking about, but I suspect very few of them actually sit down and read books or seriously go over hand examples.

Apparent today during Big50. Lot of “play by feel” and clearly unstudied players. Amazing how bet sizing can give a person away - i found it really helpful. Found past tense AJ<QQ when I was down to 12.5 bigs. Ouch.

It was nice meeting @AlpineCurt though - looking forward to meeting those who attend the meet up Thursday
