Hello :)

Hi All,

I have been lurking for quite some time and thought I would introduce myself as a first step in the 30 day posting challenge. :)

I play 1/2 live in casinos around Michigan. I play at two Indian casinos and in Detroit. We also have charity rooms where the rake goes to non-profits. I am dipping my toe into the 2/5 games once in a while as well.

I teach math at a university so if you have any math questions let me know! :) I have also studied astrophysics and I worked as an actuarial analyst for almost 4 years.

I thought this would be a good time to do a posting challenge as I am in quite a big downswing right now. I am just trying to focus on making good decisions and I really understand variance so my spirits are still high. I am happy because if this downswing had occurred about two years ago it would have been much more severe. I had a downswing near the end of last year as well and shot out of it at the beginning of this year with a nice heater. I want to learn to be more patient.....right now! ;)

My goals are to do profitable things while I ride out this downswing and then to move up to 2/5 games regularly.

I look forward to talking over some hands with you all. Thanks for reading!

Kitty, I'm coming to you with all of my math questions. I just started and there's a lot of good material to learn from.

Please do. :) There is a ton of good stuff out there. I gave a talk about poker math at the last math department meeting at my school. Just very simple pot odds vs outs, but the other teachers really liked it. I'm the coolest nerd there. :) :( LOL

I am curious what areas of the game do you have difficulties with?

The biggest problem I am having right now is with my bluffing. I am too aggressive once I start bluffing on a particular hand. I am trying to do some work with board textures and think through when it just makes sense to stop bluffing.

When I value bet I feel like I am much more logical. I think about how many streets of value I have, I think about narrowing my opponents range on each street, and I have been really getting better with what bet sizes will accomplish different goals.

Once I start bluffing in the hand I really hate to give up. I don't think about the same things that I do when I am trying to get someone to call my bets. I just convince myself that my bluff will surely work.

Also, I let the momentum of the session make me feel brave or cowardly depending on how things are going and then they keep going the same way. Newton's first law of poker. :) If things start off not going so well I have trouble turning it around, as of late. I have tried walking around to clear my head and changing tables so I don't feel like I am looking at 8 people that know I am having a bad night, but nothing has been helping.. Also, I know I don't have a big data sample to know if this is real or coincidence. I never used to have this trouble.

When things are going well I feel like I could make a living just scooping up the pots that no one else seems to want, but when things are going bad I play too tight and I don't make my usual auto-profit bets.

Anyway, thanks for asking. I think it helped me just to write it all out and define the problems better! :) Any advice is very welcomed.
