Cruise Ship Poker

Going on a cruise on Sunday (Norwegian Breakaway from NYC to Bahamas, FWIW).

They have a casino with poker. I believe it's real dealer, 1 table. The rake is 10% with a $25 cap (or maybe no cap?!).

What adjustments should I make? I know I shouldn't count my play against the rake, or do something like try to "beat the game, but lose to the rake".

My current plan is to start playing and keep track of money coming on the table (through new buy-ins) versus going off the table (through rake), and stand up once the rake is taking money off faster than people are putting it on.

Other ideas?

I don't think you can beat the rake unless the game is really deep and the players are awful. :-(

But if you just playing for entertainment, then give it a shot.

I was on that same ship back in December 2013. They ran 1 table of 2/5, which started around 8 or 9pm. The rake was as advertised, but the players were equally bad. The game didn't get deep as few bought in for max.

Just go for multiple trips to valuetown.

I played poker on a Celebrity Cruise a couple years ago. It was an e-table (yuck), but it was easy money.

Most of the players were just passengers looking for entertainment (it was this or blackjack or slots)... Very few experienced players. No need to be tricky or balance your play. I won most nights just by pressing value: players generally had no sense of hand strength or bet sizing at all.

Bluffs were mostly worthless, or -EV, as players would routinely call down with second pair or overpairs, even on scary boards.

A solid tight-aggressive strategy can be very profitable on a boat... Stick to that and you'll have a lot of fun...
