090 - MTT Concepts: 30BB and Under

Knowing how to play with 30BB or less is crucial for winning tournaments. You might not find yourself in this spot all that often in cash games, but you will commonly find yourself short-stacked on your journey to the final table. On this week’s podcast, accomplished tournament player and coach Jordan Young sits down with @Christian Soto to discuss playing with 30BB or less in MTTs.

Can you open raise and fold a 20BB stack (Tournaments) and why? At what BB where you decisions should be binary, allin or fold?

At no stack depth is your highest EV decision binary besides 2 bb, at least when you're sitting in the BB (it is often slightly more profitable to just call off 5 bb allowing yourself to fold the bottom 10-20% worst flops for your holding rather than running the cards pre).

When talking about every other position, you can certainly raise/fold off of a 15 bb stack and I do consistently, although with a smaller and stronger range from most positions. The cutoff for pot commitment when you open and someone jams behind depends on ranges of course, but it tends to be around 8-10 bb and below where you have to call off. So I tend to open push sub 12-14 bb, and will definitely open shove 15-25 in certain scenarios as well (the more you risk, the more specifically profitable of a situation is needed).
