Grinding goals for next 10 weeks

kenaceskenaces Red Chipper Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭✭
After 10+ years playing for a living I still suck at putting in the hours. So Starting yesterday I set goal to grind 400 hours in next 10 weeks(ending 1/31/2018)!

The basic plan to to play two 4 hours sessions most days and take advantage of living super close to casino. I am going to play am session then take break in afternoon(workout, time with girl, nap) and then hit it again in the evening. I am going to experiment with my normal study routine and refocus it around motivation/recovery/volume instead of my normal obsession with strategy.

anyone else have and grinding goal to share? lets get a head start on the new years resolutions!

I like that you include "time with girl" in your grinding goals :-)

Good luck! Keep us apprised at progress.

If youre trying to achieve a grinding goal, wouldnt you need to spend time with your significant other?

just a side note @kenaces , i will try to practice grinding the full 8 hours with a lunch break so your mind and body gets used to it, you may be in a good game and not want to leave but you want to be used to long hours in the first place so your game doesn't fall off

    Thanks guys

@faustovaldez123 Good advice. In general I can do 8+ hour session as long as I have my 45m dinner break. My issue is sometimes I just take a day off, or go home dinner and don't come back :)

    40 hours in the books!

Anyone else have some grinding goals?

I didn't look and don't plan too anytime soon. That said I am pretty sure it was a pretty good week as I had a +2k session Friday night.

There is really no upside to knowing my results in the short term so I just do my best to ignore normal ups and downs of the game. Then I can foucs on things I can control like playing my A-game, putting in the hours.......

Thanks for the advice. I think I can average 6.66 hours X 6 days per week and maintain A-game most of the time. I am sure somedays will be a few hours in am and a few more in the pm. Other days when I am feeling good and the games are extra good I will put in bigger grind.

For me its getting more hours in per session at live (or maybe go from 2 session to 3). When I go to ac I tend to saty for 2 or 3 nights. my usual tends to be about 6 hours the first day, 8 ish hours the 2nd and 3rd days, and 5 hours the day I'm going home....

Ive been slipping a bit on even this modest goal, and really need to push this harder. My usual 2 session day is 3 to 4 hours ....take a few hours break and then 3 to 4 hours again. But my goal has got to be push for 4 + hours on all sessions.

My goal thus becomes play at least 25 hours when I go down for 2 nights 3 days and 30+ hours when I go down for 3 nights 4 days.

in addition to the stated goals, 400 hours, time with your girl, and eating (healthy I assume)...are there any leaks you are working on? I assume you know the best as well as the area that needs work in your game? How are you address those issues and what progress have you made? What stakes and what type if game(s) do you play?

    God luck and kill it!

I am a bit obsessive about my study sometimes at the expense of putting in the hours so for the next ~2 months I am going to focus more on grinding. My study routine(s) have waxed and wained throught the years but most recently it has been ~1 hour every am. The 400 hours will be played at 2/5 and 5/10 NLH and possible some 1/2/5PLO when it runs. I might add a little 200NL and 400NL online play into the mix if I feel the need to switch it up.

Kenaces what casino do you play at?

I've been thinking about 2018 goals. I'm a part time player and my goal for 2017 was 500hrs played and $1200 profit, not counting online play. I only started playing this year after playing a few years after the poker boom and then taking the last 10 years off. So lots of adjustments. But I worked out a lot of kinks this year and should be set up for success in 2018. I'll hit the 2017 hours goal but will likely fall short on the profit goal barring a couple huge weekends. I'm committed to being a bankroll nit in 2018 and not having to take breaks for bankroll issues like I did this year. So I think I can hit 750hrs next year. Do any of you set profit/winrate/BB/hr goals or should that not be part of the thought process at all?

I rather not say which casino :)

I don't like results oriented goals in the short term, as I feel like they are just a distraction.

At the beginning of 2017, I set goals for hours played, profit, and rate. Very quickly, I found them to be a distraction and I will not make those same goals for 2018. However, I still gather all of this data simply out of habit. Probably the most important goal that I set was to commit at least 2 hours per week to studying the game. This was a pretty low bar for me as I'm sure I've probably spent 2 hours per day, but maybe such a low expectation is a good thing.

Out of curiosity, @kenaces do you set goals for those metrics (profit, hours, rate) in the long-term?

I also track everything. Only long term money goals are more related to building retirement nest egg. But much of this relates to monthly savings rate/investments....

I set a goal in 2017 for making 10k playing @ $20-$25 an hour. I became obsessed with my hourly, and it kind of ruined the game for me. At one point I was at like 7k in June, had a really brutal July, rebounded in August, and deleted my poker app. I still record session days in notes, but I just withdraw from the ATM and deposit back to the ATM when I'm done if I've won. I'm around 9.3k, and sadly I don't realistically think I break 10k in this last month as I can only play maybe twice for 2-3 hours @ $1/2. What a shame. However, I have a lot more fun when I play, a better mental outlook on the game, and I don't find myself counting paper-clipped stack's of 1000's in my basement like f**cking Gollum.

81 hours in the books. I am happy with getting 41 hours this week as I had a bunch of time consuming non-poker stuff to deal with.

I am trying to avoid win rate metrics because I can't control variance, just how I play.

I work full-time, so I am more of a recreational player, hence my goals:
    1. Play slower. Think about the action and ranges on every street. Don't make "automatic" decisions.
    2. Widen my in position pre-flop opening range.
    3. Watch at least four videos per week.
    4. Listen to podcasts from at least three different sources per week.
    5. Post a comment on Red Chip at least three times per week.
    6. Get to the card room by 5:00 p.m. at least one weekend day.
    7. Find more opportunities to 3-bet.
    8. Execute solid bankroll management.
    9. Focus on execution and +EV in my decisions, not on results.

Do you have a significant other? How do they respond to you working full-time, and then headed straight to the casino? Asking for a friend whose SO doesn't really approve of the game (let's be honest poker get's a bad rap for those who don't understand it).
